One of my new-RN problems is dealing with the massive number of docs who consult with the patients on my unit. At night, they're grouped together into on-call services, so when I page I rarely actually get my patient's doctor. To further complicate matters, they aren't very clear when they identify themselves ("This is doctor mwahhhh"). A long-time RN said she solves this problem by saying, "Let me repeat your orders back to you for accuracy" followed by "and could you please spell your name?" So it sounds as if you're just being really thorough. It sounded brilliant to me, so last night I gave it a shot. The problem was that the doctor paused for a while and then said, tightly, "S, M, I, T, H."
