Ha! "ER" is a dialect!

I've written before about code-switching and other linguistic geekery. Again now I have cause to amuse myself pondering life in the ER. I have a close friend who works in psych, so he is suitably raw and jaded, but he has never worked in an ER.

The other night he sent me a text. "How's your shift?"

My response was, "We have an empty board. Shenanigans starting."

Him: "What?"

It seemed obvious to me, but then I realized he doesn't know what a tracking board is or what I mean by shenanigans. "We don't have any patients so people are acting silly."

Him: "Silly how?"

I gave up. Narcopenia, supratentorial issues, and paradoxical stridor will probably have to wait.
